Summary of Gentoo council meeting 2025-11-09 Agenda [0] ========== 1. Roll call 2. GLEP 63 update [1] 3. Open bugs with Council participation 4. Open floor Roll call ========= Present: dilfridge (late), eschwartz (proxy for arthurzam), mgorny, robbat2, sam, soap, ulm GLEP 63 update ============== The Council has voted on approving the GLEP 63 update that clarified the key compatibility with RFC 4880 and updated the list of suggested public keyservers [1]. Additionally, updating the key recommendations from RSA2048 was discussed. mgorny suggested updating it to RSA3072 per the newer GnuPG defaults, ulm remarked we should keep 2048 as the minimum though. eschwartz and sam suggested we recommend ECC keys instead. The Council decided to revisit this after testing Token2 keys. A bug was filed for tracking [2]. Motion: approve GLEP 63 update in [1] Votes: 6 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions, 1 member absent Open bugs with Council participation ==================================== Bug 936211 "[Tracker] Gentoo Foundation dissolution" [3] -------------------------------------------------------- ulm has pointed out that we are still receiving a number of donations via the Foundation's PayPal account. robbat2 asked for assistance in asking them to switch over, which dilfridge offered. Bug 961301 "[Tracker] Requests for metadata/AUTHORS" [4] -------------------------------------------------------- There were no pending requests on the tracker. Bug 961811 "Consider procuring Token2 PIN+ security keys for developers" [5] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- robbat2 indicated that 4 key samples have been ordered, ulm confirmed receiving one already. robbat2 pointed out a number of concerns regarding Token2's ordering system. eschwartz volunteered to take the fifth sample, to test shipping to the USA. Bug 963069 "OpenPGP v5 (LibrePGP) and OpenPGP v6 (RFC 9580) formats ..." [6] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue has been resolved by the GLEP 63 update. Open floor ========== Infrastructure backup plans [7] ------------------------------- chewi asked whether Gentoo has any backup plans for its infrastructure, in case the next big funding call for OSL fails. sam pointed out that we could ask some of the more reliable mirror admins for hosting hardware. robbat2 pointed out that the human power needed to move and maintain the hardware is a larger issue. He split the hardware into three groups: - Infra services -- that need a secure home, and ideally not single sourced on one provider - Critical build machines -- partially moved to Hetzner, with possibility of moving entirely, budget permitting (with estimates exceeding 1000 EUR / mo.) - Alternative architectures and developer machines -- that have the most significant on-site maintenance needs chewi indicated that Microsoft is willing to talk about providing some hosting options, as Flatcar is dependent upon Gentoo. dilfridge indicated that he's been unsuccessful in trying to get a rack at a university / HPC center. eschwartz suggested asking Hetzner if they would sponsor more powerful hardware than they are sponsoring now. chewi asked if Codeberg could be used for building, dilfridge and eschwartz answered that they aren't suitable. On a semi-related note, a bug to track the Codeberg migration was filed [8]. Another build machine --------------------- dilfridge has indicated a need for another build machine, given that milou is fully loaded most of the time. He indicated that getting a second box would be more cost effective alternative to upgrading the current one. robbat2 pre-approved the proposal from the financial side. A bug was filed to vote on it [9]. Trademark renewal ----------------- robbat2 indicated that the renewal for the "Gentoo" word mark was approved, but the one for image mark was rejected: > Specifically, the specimen shows use for stickers, t-shirts, coffee > cups, notebooks, bumper stickers, wall clocks, mouse pads. The goods > in the registration comprise the following: Computer software, namely > operating system software that automatically configures and optimizes > performance on the underlying hardware and is adapted for a large > number of usage scenarios and applications, namely, secure servers, > development workstations, professional desktops, gaming systems > and embedded solutions. The specimen must be used on or in connection > with the goods and/or services listed in the registration. > TMEP ยง1604.12(a). The Council discussed what other specimens to provide. Among the proposals were screenshots and photographs of hardware running Gentoo, with the logo clearly visible. robbat2 requested researching other distributions that have had their logo trademarks approved recently, in order to reproduce their specimen ideas. ulm suggested producing USB memory sticks with the Gentoo logo. It was pointed out that the deadline is June 2026, but it is preferable to submit ASAP, in case it was rejected again. Implementation status of EAPI 9 in Portage ------------------------------------------ ulm asked for an update of implementation status of EAPI 9 in portage. sam indicated that the update was already given last week, and that this is not a Council matter. Filing a bug to track the implementation was suggested.
